Getting Started with Restorative Practices Course

A Childhood Development Initiative Programme

Online Course - Will be facilitated via Zoom.

Suitable for Primary & Post-Primary teachers and SNAs.

What are Restorative Practices?

The Childhood Development Initiative (CDI) has been implementing a Restorative Practices (RP) Programme since 2010. RP is both a way of being and a set of skills for building strong relationships and resolving conflict in a simple and emotionally healthy manner.

Restorative practices help us develop and sustain strong and happy families, workplaces and communities by:

  • Actively developing good relationships;
  • Stopping conflict escalating out of control; and
  • Repairing harm caused by serious wrongdoing.

When you are using RP you are intentionally choosing to connect with people and actively promoting UNDERSTANDING and EMPATHY between people. You have HIGH EXPECTATIONS of yourself and others and try to provide SUPPORT to yourself and others to meet those expectations. And you try to do things WITH others in a FAIR and RESPECTFUL way.

When you use RP to do these things consistently, you have better relationships and less conflict with the people around you. When things go wrong, restorative practices also give you a proven method for resolving conflicts and repairing relationship that have been harmed by wrongdoing.

Become competent to begin using RP after this training. At a later stage gain the skills to become an RP facilitator after further training. RP builds on skills that everyone has and provides a simple framework for using those skills more consistently and, consequently, more effectively.

Teachers who have done CDI’s RP training and are using restorative practices as a way of working report that their work is easier, more enjoyable and more effective; they report better relationships with their pupils and their parents and colleagues; they report increased confidence and competence in conflict resolution and disciplinary issues.

What Does RP Training Involve?

CDI offer three levels of RP training. Level one is as follows:

1 - Getting Started With Restorative Practices:

This training explains what restorative practices are and how the whole RP approach works. The training provides an overview of the origins and development of RP; the evidence of outcomes that can be expected from adopting RP; and an outline of the skills that are used when taking a restorative approach. When you have done this short course, you will be able to;

• Use Restorative Language – this is a way of talking that promotes empathy and understanding between people. Using restorative language helps us to build relationships and to stop conflict getting out of hand; and

• Have Restorative Conversations – these are conversations we have if we have a problem with another person when either they have let us down or we have let them down. Sorting the problem out restoratively really helps with keeping the relationship healthy.

This training builds on the Getting Started With RP course and explains what restorative circles, meetings and conferences are, what they can be used for and how they are facilitated. People doing this training learn how to facilitate :

*Restorative Circles – which can be used to build good relationships in groups or to solve problems in groups;

*Restorative Meetings – which are used to resolve conflict in groups; and

*Restorative Conferences – which are used to address serious wrongdoing. RP Conferences work on the basis that the wrongdoer takes responsibility for their actions and the people harmed by the wrongdoing are supported to overcome and move on from that harm.
