20-3306-AUT-Introductory Ukulele Workshop

Is there an instrument that can be used to foster music literacy in classroom settings that is fun to play, inexpensive, portable, and suited to any style of music?

Yes there is! The ukulele is the ideal instrument for use in the classroom for many reasons. Making music with a ukulele is a great group learning experience. Classes as young as 2nd class can learn the elements of music. Ukuleles are a good size and price and they contain levels of complexity. A ukulele is also easy to carry and just the right size for little hands. A basic ukulele is roughly €25 and, unlike the tin whistle, it has layers of intricacy that are ideal for group learning.

This introductory workshop is facilitated by former Voice of Ireland semi-finalist and primary school teacher, Moylan Brunnock.

Our ukulele course aims to give teachers

  • The confidence and ability to teach the elements of music through ukulele in the classroom.
  • Knowledge on the background of the ukulele and why it is considered “the instrument of the people”.
  • A healthy bank of chords and songs to share with your class.
  • A positive disposition toward music education and an understanding that everyone and anyone can be a musician.

It would be beneficial for participants to have a ukulele to hand during this workshop but it is not essential.
