20-3163-SPR-Transition from 6th Class to Secondary School

For Primary and Post-Primary Teachers

Children find it helpful to talk about their concerns and excitements with people they can trust.

This 2 hour session is an opportunity for you to consider how to support pupils as they prepare for Secondary school.

Learning objectives for teachers:

  • To gain an understanding of thoughts and feelings that are part of the transition to Secondary school for pupils (fears, expectations and excitements)
  • To learn and share creative ways of supporting pupils on topics such as:

    • Seeing responsibility in a positive light

    • Self-esteem

    • Friendships

    • Meeting challenges

    • Recognising what helped them in the past

    • How to help them to identify the supportive people that are already part of their lives

    • Help them to realise that they are not alone

This is a big step for lots of children depending on their own life experience. This 2 hour session is designed to help children realise that others have similar feelings and that they have the capability to adapt.

This year has been a very different year for them under the circumstances that have presented with Covid 19 in their school and home life.  They may value time to chat with you and their classmates about moving out of Primary school and into Secondary school. It may ease the transition that is ahead of them.
