PMC & SSE - Encouraging Playfulness (2 Part Webinar)

Target Audience:

Suitable for School leaders, Maths Post-holders, SETs and Primary Teachers of all classes

Wednesday the 18th and 25th March - 7.00pm to 8.00pm

Learning Outcomes/Learning Intentions of the webinar:

Specific Curricular Alignment (SSE):
Gain insights into using the PMC as a basis for School Self-Evaluation (SSE) by selecting specific goals and actions related to playfulness.

Pedagogical Understanding:

  • Understand the role of playfulness as one of the five key pedagogical practices in the Primary Mathematics Curriculum (PMC).
  • Recognize the shift from "Aistear" to a broader ethos of play that applies to all primary classes and subjects, not just the infant years.
  • Appreciate how encouraging playfulness naturally links with and enables other key pedagogies, fostering an inclusive and rich learning environment.

Practical Classroom Strategies:

  • Identify practical actions  to provide students with autonomous and creative access to diverse resources and equipment.
  • Learn to implement instructional routines that promote reasoning and play, such as "Build it, Sketch it, Write it!" and "Notice & Wonder".
  • Develop techniques to transform traditional tasks, such as using mini-whiteboards for textbook questions or turning lists of calculations into "number strings".
  • Explore methods for integrating technology and literature, including using virtual manipulatives and children's stories to teach mathematical concepts.

Classroom Culture and Environment:

  • Learn how to cultivate a growth mindset by normalizing mistakes through activities like "My Favorite No" and by adopting "Ronda’s Four Freedoms".
  • Understand how to create maths-rich environments, both indoors (e.g., sociodramatic play areas) and outdoors (e.g., maths trails and playground markings).
  • Enhance teacher disposition by being playful in interactions, using puppets, props, and song/dance to engage students.
