Diabetes in Schools 

Many children attending our schools are living with diabetes. This webinar will give an overview of diabetes and how it may impact on a student during the school day. It is suitable for teachers and SNAs who are working with children with diabetes in the school setting. The following topics will be addressed: 

Session 1:

  • What is diabetes?
  • Types of diabetes and medication
  • Daily life of a person with diabetes
  • Blood glucose test
  • Hypoglycaemia - causes, symptoms, actions
  • Hyperglycaemia -  causes, symptoms, actions
  • Factors that affect blood glucose levels
  • Exercise

Session 2:

  • Diabetes Coma/Shock
  • Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Insulin pumps 
  • Flash Glucose Monitors and Continuous Glucose Monitors 
  • Loops Systems
  • Celebrate it!
  • Assisting at school
  • Walk through of the HSE care needs document
  • Walk through of the KiDS diabetes education program for schools
  • Diabetes and mental health
  • Links to a variety of resources and supports

This course will run over two evenings:

Monday 30th September - 7.00pm to 8.00pm

Monday 7th October - 7.00pm to 8.00pm

Bio of the presenter: 

Aisling White has been living with type 1 diabetes for the past 27 years. She experienced both primary school, secondary school and college as a person living with diabetes. She qualified with a Bachelors of Education and currently works as a primary school teacher. 

Aisling promotes peer support and advocates for those living with diabetes. She is involved in a number of groups including the Limerick Adults with Type 1 Diabetes Support Group, the Irish Adults with Type 1 Exercise Support Group, the MidWest Diabetes Advocacy Group, the Diabetes Ireland Advocacy Group, the Global Heart Hub Advocacy Group,  the International Diabetes Federation Europe's Youth Leadership Programme, Blue Circle Voices and the One Young World Leadership Platform. 

She also provides continuing professional development courses for school staff entitled ‘Diabetes in Schools’. These courses are run by local education centres and provide staff with diabetes awareness training as well as access to resources to enable them to best support students with diabetes in their school setting. Aisling aims to spread diabetes awareness and support schools to create a positive and empowering environment for students living with diabetes.
