Design Thinking in the Leaving Certificate Business Course

This practical and engaging one-hour webinar introduces Leaving Certificate Business teachers to the power of Design Thinking as both a core element of the syllabus and a transformative classroom methodology. Grounded in real educational practice and aligned directly to the LC Business course - particularly Enterprise, Managing and Business in Action - it equips teachers with simple, classroom-ready tools to enhance creativity, problem-solving, student engagement and higher-order thinking. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the Design Thinking process, explore how it naturally strengthens syllabus outcomes and learn how to integrate empathy mapping, ideation strategies, prototyping and iterative learning into everyday teaching. Ideal for teachers of all experience levels, this session offers fresh perspectives, ready-to-use activities and an energising approach to teaching Business in a rapidly changing world.

Bio: James Moynihan is an experienced teacher, Assistant Principal, and Design Thinking specialist based in Cork. With over twenty years teaching across the humanities, including English, History, and Irish.  He brings deep classroom expertise and a practical understanding of what works in Irish secondary schools.

James holds multiple degrees from University College Cork, including an MA in English, a BCL, an Advanced Diploma in Education & the Law, and a First-Class Honours MA in Innovation through Design Thinking. His work focuses on developing inclusive, creative learning environments that support student achievement and teacher effectiveness.

As a facilitator and professional development provider, James has designed and delivered programmes in creativity, problem-solving, and educational innovation for schools across Ireland. He specialises in making Design Thinking accessible and relevant for Leaving Certificate Business teachers, demonstrating how it aligns naturally with the specification—particularly in Enterprise, Managing, and Business in Action.

James works with schools to integrate design thinking methodologies into classroom practice in ways that are practical, sustainable, and rooted in the realities of Irish post-primary education.
